Permanent Anklets: Cost, Length and Which Studios Weld Them
482 studios weld anklets, and they cost more than a bracelet for one boring reason. What to know about length, shoes and summer.

An anklet is the second thing most people ask about once they have a welded bracelet, and it is the piece where the pricing surprises land. Same chain, same weld — it just takes considerably more of it.
Why it costs more than a bracelet
A wrist takes about seven inches of chain. An ankle takes nine to eleven. At a studio quoting a flat price per finished piece that difference is usually modest. At one quoting per inch it is not.
So the first question at the counter is which basis you are being quoted on, and the second is whether the weld fee is included. Both are worth asking before the chain comes off the reel, because once it is cut to your ankle it is cut.
Getting the length right
Anklets are fitted looser than bracelets, for a good reason: an ankle changes size through the day far more than a wrist does. Heat, salt water, long flights and standing all day will all swell it. A studio that fits an anklet snug in an air-conditioned shop at eleven in the morning has fitted it wrong.
The usual guidance is roughly a finger's width of slack — enough to rotate the chain freely around the ankle bone. If it sits exactly where they left it, ask for more.
Shoes are the thing nobody warns you about
A welded anklet lives under boots, trainers and the back of every heel strap you own. That is fine for gold filled and solid gold, which are hard enough to take it. It is less fine for a fine sterling chain, which will show wear at the friction points within a season.
If you wear closed shoes most of the year, ask for the heavier gauge of whatever chain you like. It costs a little more per inch, and it is the difference between a piece that lasts and one that thins. Gold filled versus solid gold, compared.
One ankle or both
One, almost always, and which one does not matter. The only practical consideration is your driving foot if you drive barefoot in summer, because a chain under a pedal foot picks up more wear.
Airports, MRIs and the rest
Exactly as for a bracelet: a fine gold or silver chain is not magnetic and does not trouble a walk-through scanner. An MRI is a separate conversation and depends on the metal. What happens at an MRI or an airport.
How much does a permanent anklet cost?
Expect meaningfully more than a bracelet, because an ankle takes nine to eleven inches of chain against about seven for a wrist. At a studio quoting a flat price the gap is modest; at one quoting per inch it scales directly with length. Ask which basis you are on before the chain is cut.
How tight should a permanent anklet be?
Looser than a bracelet — about a finger's width of slack, enough to rotate the chain freely around the ankle bone. Ankles swell with heat, salt water, flights and standing, so one fitted snug in the morning can be uncomfortable by the evening.
Can you wear a permanent anklet with shoes?
Yes, but choose the metal for it. Gold filled and solid gold handle the constant friction of boots and heel straps; a fine sterling silver chain will show wear at the contact points within a season. If you wear closed shoes most of the year, ask for a heavier gauge.
